Our Story |
Today in Kenya, approximately one million children are unable to attend school. Mostly, this is due to the shortage of schools close to these children's homes. Lack of proximity to schools is a barrier to educational opportunities for children living in rural towns, especially for girls.
Geographic inaccessibility of schools and economic circumstances often force families to make difficult decisions about schooling for their children. Many times, young girls are kept at home and denied a chance to become educated, empowered women. In Eldoret, Kenya, a town near Kenya's border with Uganda, there are no secondary schools available for girls. Because these girls have no high school in their region and cannot afford to go to school in another city, their access to education is limited. To help girls in Eldoret access secondary education and participate more fully in their communities, we, in partnership with the Assumption Sisters of Eldoret, have embarked on starting a self-sufficient girls boarding high school. While the Assumption Sisters can provide teachers, curriculum, and land, they need our help to build the school. |
